Since October 13, 2015, iMovie creates and now exports 4K, more precisely in UHD (in 3840 x 2160 pixels). This announcement will no doubt benifit many PC owners and their favorite software that exports 4K. The "small" iMovie, integrated with the Mac, finally aligns them and catching up. The compatibility was not possible until now because of a voluntary annoying clamping which Apple often secret. The Apple brand may have had the same problem with his Adobe Premiere Elements: not to give in to the "little" sibling, would not compete with the older (Premiere Pro on PC, FCPX Mac). But it is the arrival of the iPhone 6S that boosts the arrival of this 4K.

Anyway, this is an iMovie update in 10.1 which finally lifts the unlock (it weighs 2.02 GB download). To create and share (export) in UHD "says 4K". It is necessary to have 10.10.5 OSX or higher with 4GB of RAM. Mac minimum must date from 2011 (in theory, in practice, it should be checked).

The test conducted in Yosemite works very well, but of course, the newest Apple platform, El Capitan, should work without any problem. The only case where export seems not to display 4K is when try to share a 4K rush that was already present on the timeline before updating the version 10.1.

Several settings are possible. As sharing ProRes be preferred which, on paper, provides the best possible quality of restitution.

To be complete - and that is not specific to Apple - specify that 4K playback at full resolution is only possible on certain Macs: iMac are concerned with Retina display and the Mac Pro (2013 or later) connected to 4K screen.

Version 10.1 also allows to create and share movies designed from 1080p HD video at 60 frames per second. Recall that the 60fps, very fashionable on ActionCam cameras, allows to render more fluid.
