Pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest forms of cancer known to man, but it?s also one of the least studied and researched. Recent pushes to change that are beginning to make headway as evidenced by a possible new vaccine that may assist in preventing pancreatic cancer?s spread.

?With less than a 10 percent survival rate at the 5-year mark, pancreatic cancer is a near death sentence for those who receives this diagnosis,? says Dr. Gregory Echt, one of the physicians behind the Sandler-Kenner Foundation and the founder and lead surgeon at Choice Cancer Care. ?One of the reasons why this form of cancer is especially deadly is found in the fact it tends to be rather aggressive and spreads quite readily even after surgical tumor removal. A new vaccine under development is showing promise in stopping this progression.?

Dr. Echt is referring to research involving the use of oncolytic viruses, which are known to kill cancer without necessarily harming the rest of the body. The vaccine under development is designed to essentially outsmart cancer cells by encouraging the body?s own immune system into killing the cells.

?Oncolytic viruses could very well hold one of the keys to battling pancreatic cancer,? says Dr. Echt. ?These viruses, when introduced into the body, tend to only present with mild, flu-like symptoms in the patient. The body, however, reacts ferociously, killing cancer cells and the viruses without harming healthy cells in the process.?

Canadian researchers are working on developing the vaccine, which is also known to produce much milder side effects than traditional chemotherapy. How soon a vaccine would be available for use remains unclear. At present, the vaccine is being studied in post-surgical cases, meant to prevent the spread and/or relapse of the disease after successful surgical removal of pancreatic tumors.

About The Sandler-Kenner Foundation

The Sandler-Kenner Foundation, established in 2007 as the Las Colinas Cancer Center Foundation, was renamed in early 2011 in the memory of Michael Sandler and Peter Kenner, both of whom passed away from pancreatic cancer, a lethal disease that is difficult to diagnose until it has reached an advanced stage.
