Randall Taradash Argues that New Study Demonstrates Workplace Injury Risk for Nurses

A new study from the Occupational Health Safety Network shows that healthcare professionals, and nurses in particular, faced significant risk for workplace injury from 2012 through 2014. According to the report, healthcare professionals account for more than 20 percent of all nonfatal workplace injuries, making healthcare the most injury-prone industry.

That's no surprise to McHenry County personal injury attorney Randall Taradash. "Healthcare may not seem like a dangerous profession," Mr. Taradash explained. "But nurses and other healthcare workers face a wide range of risks. I see healthcare workers all the time who have been injured on the job."

The report showed that most healthcare injuries are related to three specific types of work: patient handling and moving, slips and falls, and workplace violence. Nearly 60 percent of the injuries involved either nurses or nursing assistants. In nearly half of the patient handling injuries, lifting equipment was available, but was not used.

Randall Taradash argues that nurses may not always use lifting equipment and other safety devices because of the urgency of their work. "In my experience, nurses are overwhelmingly concerned about their patients' well-being, so they'll do whatever needs to be done even if they don't have immediate access to safety equipment. That may mean lifting or handling a patient without the right lifting equipment to prevent injury."

Mr. Taradash, a personal injury attorney in McHenry County, urges hospitals to provide better safety training and make safety equipment more accessible. He claims that many of these injuries could be preventable if nurses and other healthcare workers had sufficient safety equipment readily available at all times.
