According to a recent study from Liberty Mutual, overexertion and slip and falls in the workplace cost the economy more than $25 billion in 2012. The data comes from the fifteenth edition of the Liberty Mutual Research Institute for Safety's Workplace Safety Index. The study compiles claims data from dozens of the largest insurance companies.
Chicago slip and fall lawyer Donald Fohrman wasn't surprised by the findings. "I work with a lot of people who have suffered injuries at work or just in day-to-day life," he explained. "A large portion of those injuries come from simple things like working too hard or slipping or falling. The irony is that those are some of the most easily preventable accidents."
The study found that slip-and-fall accidents were most prevalent in the Midwest, likely because of the weather. Nearly a third of all workers' compensation claims in Midwestern states came as a result of falls during the winter months. In Illinois, nearly 32 percent of all claims were related to winter falls, the fourth highest percentage in the country.
"It's frustrating that so many people get injured in these accidents," Donald Fohrman expressed. "It's easy to put salt down, have your parking lot plowed, and just get out there and clear a path. So much can be done to keep workers, customers, and other property guests safe during the winter."
Mr. Fohrman, a slip and fall lawyer in Chicago explained that it's not just workers who are risk. "Every property owner has an obligation to reduce these risks. We know slips and falls are a big risk. There's no reason not to take action."
