Bradley Dworkin Supports Proposed Speed Limiter Mandate

Heavy-duty trucks may soon have equipment installed that restricts their ability to go above a certain speed limit. That's according to a new rule that was proposed by the Department of Transportation. The rule was sent to the White House Office of Management and Budget on May 19.

Chicago truck accident lawyer Bradley Dworkin supports the proposed rule. "Speeding is one of the top causes of accidents that involve injuries and fatalities," he explained. "When it's a 30,000 pound truck that's doing the speeding, that's a recipe for disaster".

Under the new rule, trucks that weigh more than 27,000 pounds would have to have speed limiters, or devices that restrict the speed, installed in the vehicle. There would be no way for the driver to override the speed restriction.

Some trucking associations oppose the rule. They claim that drivers have enough training and skill to make sure they're driving at a safe speed.

Mr. Dworkin, a Chicago truck accident lawyer, rejects that claim. "I'm sure that the vast majority of drivers operate their vehicles safely," he argued. "However, all it takes is for one driver to be out-of-control for them to ruin or even end someone else's life. These trucks are too big and too powerful for us to take that chance."

Once the OMB approves the proposal, it will be open for 60 days for public comment. After that period, the DOT will revise the law and resubmit it to the White House OMB. Once that is complete, the rule will be enacted and it will take effect in approximately 60 days.
