Rather than teach science, technology, engineering, and mathematics as distinct, STEM educators work to present these subjects in an interdisciplinary approach. STEM incorporates real world examples in its teaching, thus allowing students to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Tracy Rexroat, an Arizona-based educator, has worked hard to encourage the adoption of STEM at earlier ages. Even though the United States has historically performed quite well in these fields, fewer students are interested in a STEM career or have proficiency in the disciplines. From elementary to high school, the number of students who lose interest in STEM fields continues to grow by the year.
As a result, the current administration announced efforts in 2009 to motivate students to gain interest in STEM subjects. Billions of dollars were set for the "Educate to Innovate" campaign, and subsequent budgets have provisioned funds for increased STEM awareness among learners. Additionally, the campaigns have focused on training enough educators to handle the needs of students. The aim is to raise America's performance standards when it comes to sciences and math internationally.
All the effort is geared towards accomplishing a purpose. Research performed on the outlook for STEM jobs shows that as many as 8 million workers will be required by the year 2018. The manufacturing and computing sectors will provide significant employment for workers, followed by physical sciences and mathematics. While many of these jobs will not require advanced levels of education, a four-year degree will be valued when it comes to negotiating starting salaries.
The shortage of STEM workers is not an American problem alone. Europe is also faced with a shortage of STEM-educated graduates, and countries like the United Kingdom and Germany are working towards promoting the adoption of the subjects.
Rexroat has been a passionate champion for STEM in Arizona and is recognized as one of the state's best educators. She earned a Bachelor's in Mechanical Technology degree from the University of South Dakota and Master in Technology education while working in the Air National Guard. For more than 20 years, she supervised repair and inspection of aerospace equipment for the Guard. Combined with a decade of experience at Ford Motor Company, Rexroat is one of the most experienced educators in the profession.
About: Tracy Rexroat has been a strong supporter of increased education of STEM fields. She earned a degree in Mechanical Technology at the University of South Dakota, and a Master?s degree in Technology Education while working in industry and serving in the National Guard. She embraced education as a way to give back to students, industry leaders in manufacturing, and the community.
