On July 25th, the Cosmopolitan Hotel experienced a fire that caused considerable damage to the pool deck and the upper floors of the building. The fast moving fire would have been much worse had it not been for the rapid actions of hotel staff and first responders who quickly evacuated the hotel and ushered guests to safety.
"It doesn't take a Las Vegas hotel injury attorney to know that when people travel, the last thing on their mind is fire safety. It's not something most people think about when they come here in preparation for all the sights and activities the city has to offer," remarked attorney George T. Bochanis.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but signs indicate that it may have been caused by the lights strung between the fake palm trees that lined the pool deck. It's speculated that an electrical short circuit ignited these foam palm trees. While not easily ignited, they burn with an intense heat once lit that makes it easy for fires to spread quickly. Furthermore, they generate a considerable amount of smoke that makes evacuation and rescue extremely hazardous.
"Fake palm trees made of foam have become an integral part of the Las Vegas scene. While they require less water to keep green, they are a dangerous addition to the landscape. As this fire demonstrated, the addition of fake palm trees comes with its own risks that I believe outweigh the rewards," opined Bochanis.
The hotel has not been found to be in violation of any building codes or safety ordinances. Indeed, at this time it appears that hotel staff performed their duties and that safety systems functioned properly. This is evidenced by the rapid evacuation and the blessing that only one person was admitted to the hospital for smoke inhalation.
"Guests in the Cosmopolitan Hotel were fortunate. Hotel fires are more common than people realize and it's important for travelers to know not only the safety record of a hotel, but also their procedures and evacuation routes should something like this happen to them," instructed Las Vegas hotel injury attorney George T. Bochanis.
