Sygma Solutions is the leading provider of CAT and Genny training courses in the UK and is now officially approved by the CITB, EUSR, and The Survey Association. Most people engaged in any type of excavation work would agree that operatives should undertake a CAT course before attempting to carry out any surveys on site. Indeed, most local authorities, and other bodies such as Network Rail, will not allow a survey to be undertaken by anyone other than those holding certification that they require. Many contractors also have similar requirements.

Despite the amount of training available, there are still far too many cable and utility strikes in the UK, running at an average of around 60,000 a year or around 230 every working day. A lot of these could have been avoided if operatives had the correct level of training, such as an EUSR CAT and Genny training course and resulting certificate.

Even though the latest CAT and Genny models have some great functions, they still have certain limitations, and the courses run by Sygma Solutions make certain to cover these in depth so that operatives do not make mistakes.

Sygma Solutions CAT training includes the reasons for using buried pipe and cable locators, and the understanding of the health and safety implications, including guidance on how to comply with HSG47, which is the set of guidelines issued by the HSE. Operatives are taught how to read and understand buried service plans, and advised that they are not always accurate. The courses then cover electromagnetic theory showing how a pipe and cable locator works, and include a session on "myth busting" helping to show attendees what the equipment can and cannot locate.

Courses then go on to cover the features of the CAT 4 and Genny 4, learn how to operate the equipment in different modes, and learn how to interpret the signals. They are also shown how to ensure that the CAT and Genny are working correctly. The course covers the advantages of dual frequency signals with the Genny 4 where the second frequency allows the identification of thin cables such as telecoms. They are also taught blind induction searching and nulling of services.

Class work is followed by practical work on site so that attendees can learn how to use the tools with confidence.
