The stench of a long-running garbage crisis is expected to bid farewell to the street of Lebanon shortly. Thrash crisis in Lebanon was declared in July 2015- heaps of waste piled up in the streets of Beirut and its nearby regions after the nation's largest landfill Naameh closed down. This largely scattered garbage on roads of capital and beyond is posing a serious threat to the health and environment for Lebanese populace, and it is high-time to bring in some lasting solutions and waste management strategies that can effectively address the ongoing garbage crisis.
This disquieting amount of waste occupying the streets of this beautiful Middle Eastern country impelled professionals of architecture & designing fraternity to showcase their up-cycled and recycled projects, all aiming to check rubbish and promote the positive image of the country. To bring forth a revolutionary change in the Lebanese garbage crisis scene, several renowned architects and designers gathered up during the Annual Beirut Design Week and showcased their projects to rein the extreme unpleasantness of living in Beirut.
Designers, including Mohamed Hamdoun spoke about working with new local environmental organizations to source materials and clean-up communities. 50-year-old architect Hamdoun who is widely acclaimed for his commendable ability to successfully deliver complex projects showcased his work through his company Archistyle and Design. His project focused on recycling the plastic waste; where plastic-based waste material can be recycled into tiles and some other items of utility and construction waste that can be 3D printed into the tiles.
Bringing the project into the limelight, Hamdoun also stated that this waste crisis shall be seen beyond a setback for the capital. In fact, this is an ideal opportunity for designers to unveil their skills and assist in the clean-up process of Beirut. Reports suggest that for the past two years, Hamdoun?s firm Archistyle and Design has received the highest number of clients who all request for products that are environment-friendly. This surge shows that awareness in the public is rapidly increasing and just like the government, architects and clean-up communities they too want to contribute in bringing an end to this horrendous garbage menace.
Similar to Mohamed Hamdoun, other designers and architects also imparted their ability and versatility in material recycling via their projects. All projects were different, but the motto was same- to convert thrash into treasure and actively respond to the ongoing thrash crisis in Lebanon. Let?s anticipate that these sustainable projects will bring down mountains of garbage and no new ones will ever exist.
