Fluorescent Probes Enriching Live Cell Imaging

According to a new research report by RNCOS entitled, Global Live Cell Imaging Market Outlook 2020, Fluorescence microscopy of live cells is becoming an integral part of modern cell biology. Fluorescent protein (FP) tags, live cell dyes, and other methods to fluorescently label proteins of interest are providing a range of tools to investigate virtually any cellular process under the microscope. Nowadays, fluorescent tags are used for in vivo tracking of proteins in order to provide an array of new data on cell function.

Recently, researchers from Switzerland have developed a far-red, fluorogenic probes for fluorescence imaging of actin and tubulin in living cells. The probes combine minimal cytotoxicity to image cellular structures with excellent brightness and photostability. The researchers applied the discovered fluorescence probes in stimulated emission depletion (STED) microscopy, which enable them to reveal the ninefold symmetry of the centrosome and the spatial organization of actin in the axon of cultured (live) rat neurons. Similarly, the Institute of Applied Physics and Center for Functional Nanostructures (CFN) along with Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Germany has engineered fluorescent proteins (FPs) from natural sources to optimize their properties as genetically encoded markers. The researchers engineered FPs into several forms like photoactivatable, photoconvertible, and Photoswitchable that provide super-resolution of live cells in culture.
