Urban Farming In Backyard Gardens On The Rise Thanks To SNAP Benefits For Seeds

Urban farming in a backyard garden can do more than help supply people with a steady stream of cash. Experts are increasingly using locally-grown produce as a way to promote healthy living amongst the disadvantaged. More communities and states are looking to produce as a way to help promote health, reduce healthcare costs, and keep needy families fed.

Many states already include seeds as a SNAP benefit. The program, which was formerly referred to as food stamps, often allows recipients to use their benefits to purchase seeds that are intended for growing, as part of their standard food benefits. This allows almost anyone to begin urban farming on a scale great enough to keep their family fed, even if their current benefit allowance is difficult to stretch from month to month.

In addition to seed benefits, which vary from one state to the next, some local food banks are also making produce a priority. According to a recent Fox News report, 30 different food banks across the country now have programs that provide produce by prescription. Food trucks carry the produce to local clinics where doctors write prescriptions for needy patients. In some cases, people are able to receive as much as 25 pounds of produce in a single trip. Approximately 1.25 billion pounds have been distributed in the last year, which is nearly twice the amount dispersed the prior year.

"Food banks are trying to do better by providing fewer starches and carbs and more lean proteins, fruits, vegetables and whole grains," Dr. Hilary Seligman says. As a senior medical adviser for Feeding America, she understands how important good diet is for maintaining health and controlling conditions like diabetes. She adds, "The nutritious foods that are expensive for our clients are also expensive for food banks. We're figuring out how we can do this and do it better."

Food banks and SNAP benefits are only part of the solution, though. People can learn to garden and not only grow a bounty for their own families, but also earn a profit from their efforts. With proper planning, it€™s easy to earn $1,000 or more per season from a plot that€™s about 1,000 square feet.
