Rob Dunham, an Edmonton-based outfitter and hunter, has defended the killing of Cecil the lion. With many out rightly rejecting the claims of hunters that killing of lions or for that matter, any other animals economically helps local people, Dunham has come out in support of such killings and has only emphasized the correctness of these claims.
The alleged killing of Cecil the lion by Minnesota-based dentist Walter Palmer has sparked outrage on the internet with many people condemning the act of hunting itself. While Palmer is facing poaching charges, outfitters and hunters have come out in numbers to his rescue and to support regulated hunting. Hunters are united in their views, and are saying that killing of lions or other animals in Africa benefits the not-so-well-provided natives of these lands.
Rob Dunham, specifically, has been sharing his thoughts on the incident as well as on the act of hunting as a whole. "To excuse the pun, the lion's share often goes to the community," he opined. He, being an outfitter himself, has taken several of his clients to African lion hunting trips. He mentions that these trips are very beneficial for local communities and people, many of whom have the permit of allowing these hunts in their area.
While the jury is still out on whether or not "trophy hunting" should be permitted and whether Walter Palmer should be punished or be acquitted from the charges of the Zimbabwe lion controversy, outfitters like Rob Dunham are standing strong with their claims that these hunting trips are as beneficial for local people as they are for hunters.
