The Prince Edward Island, also known as PEI, has been experiencing an outstanding growth rate of more than 2 percent, since the last few years, which has been described as incredible by the APEC.
According to the report, immigration from people to the island was the single biggest contributors to the growth in population for the region. Not just Prince Edward Island, the entire Maritime region saw a phenomenal growth in population, after the provincial governments introduced concerted efforts to increase immigration to their provinces. The province of Nova Scotia has shown an average population growth rate of nearly one per cent for the same period under consideration, making it the fastest growth in 4 decades. While New Brunswick saw an average growth of nearly half a percentage point per year, the highest, the province averaged an annual growth rate of 0.5 per cent, which was its highest since the early 1990s.
The Provincial Nominee Programs Contribute To Population Growth
According to the report published by APEC, the provincial nominee programs run by the Atlantic provinces of Canada were instrumental in bringing more than 20,000 new immigrants into the maritime region in the years between 2016 and 2018.
The provincial nominee programs were instituted to enable provinces in Canada to select candidates for immigration to their province and nominate them, for settling in their province. The provinces participating in the PNP, nominate a specific number of economically based immigrants for permanent residence in the country. Each of the provincial nominee programs have been divided into a number of varied streams that are specifically designed to enable the provinces to meet the need for diverse labour force needs in the province.
The Atlantic Immigration Pilot, which was an initiative launched in joint partnership by the federal and provincial governments of the region, had brought in 1600 additional immigrants to the area since 2017 according to the report published by APEC. The pilot program provided a fast-track route to obtaining permanent residence in Canada for foreign immigrant workers, who were hired by local employers in the Atlantic region of Canada as they were unable to obtain enough local workers to fill the vacancies. The growth in population has been seen as a welcome step by the provinces as it would contribute greatly to the growth in the provincial economy. The APEC stated however, that more immigration would be needed to sustain the population growth in the provinces in the coming years.
