New Delhi, August 21st, 2018: Savlon, ITC?s leading hygiene brand, unveiled ?Savlon Swasth India Mission? in 2016 on Children's day with the award winning Healthy Hands Chalk Sticks. The programme is anchored on the 'Healthier kids, Stronger India' proposition and in a span of less than two years has already covered more than 3700 schools benefitting over 1.7 million children across key states in India like Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Jharkhand and Karnataka.

Building on the success of the 'Healthy Hands Chalk Sticks', the company also launched its 'Savlon ID Guard' initiative. The initiative leveraged Savlon?s multi-use handwash sachet to enhance convenience and induce children into the habit of washing hands. The same has been piloted in 32 schools and will be rolled out to over 1000 schools in the ensuing months.

The overall aim of the Mission is to encourage behavioural change towards washing hands amongst children through various engaging and entertaining educational initiatives in schools. The program introduced interactive activities including a series of storytelling and visual engagement that educate and encourage children to adopt good hand hygiene practices. This year the mission will further expand its objective of encouraging behavioural change towards washing hands amongst children.

According to a recent report by the WHO, ?In order to prevent the spread of infections, hand hygiene must be routinely practiced. Appropriate hand hygiene techniques can go a long way in reducing and cross-transmission of infections and the risk of occupational exposure to infectious diseases. Infections acquired while receiving health care have significantly increased the mortality rate around the world by thousands. Hands have been identified as the major source of germ transmission while providing health care. Every person involved in patient care, healthcare worker or otherwise, should be able to accurately perform hand hygiene and at the appropriate time?.

ITC?s integrated approach to hygiene and sanitation as part of its social investment programme was launched a few years back. In addition to building sanitation infrastructure, this programme is focused on hygiene and sanitation education through extensive awareness building programmes designed to induce behavioural change. Students and teachers are trained on WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) principles, and students are motivated to form WATSAN (Water and Sanitation) Committees and Child Cabinets to take ownership of WASH areas in schools. Savlon Swasth India Mission seeks to accelerate and reinforce ITC?s ongoing efforts in sanitation and hygiene education in India.
