Cable avoidance training company Sygma Solutions is pleased to announce that it can now provide cable avoidance training anywhere in the UK. Classes are held on our own site in Westhoughton, Bolton, or can be provided on the client?s site or anywhere else in the UK.

There are some 60,000 cable and utility strikes in the UK every year, which works out to 1,250 a day (assuming a five day week). First class cable avoidance training is critical in order to reduce this number. At best, a utility strike is a nuisance and can cause loss of time on a job, resulting in loss of money.

It can also get the contractor involved with the Health and Safety Executive, may result in fines, and there can be loss of reputation. At worst, there can be injury and death. Sygma Solutions works hard to provide top quality training in the use of Cable Avoidance Tools (CAT?s) and Signal Generators (Genny?s) and covers a wide range of techniques which most operatives have never seen before.

The five day course operated by the company covers classroom training and on-site training in order to give operators a complete understanding of the correct use of Genny?s and CAT?s. Many courses are based around Power and Radio passive use, but this course goes much further and is officially approved by The Survey Association.

The course ensures that operatives will have an improved understanding of how to avoid causing damage to buried cables and pipes, that they have the skills and confidence to carry out a site survey appropriately, and that they will work in a safer more efficient and cost-effective way.

Classroom work commences with understanding the health, safety, and financial implications when carrying out groundworks, and includes guidance in how to comply with HSG47 which is aimed at people operating on National Grid substations and compounds. This is a requirement of the Site Engineer, Principal Contractor Representative, and Contractor Representative. Initial HSG47 training is valid for three years when a refresher course must be taken which is valid for a further three years. This training can only be provided by a company such as Sygma which meets the EUSR (Energy & Utility Skills) requirements.

Classroom training continues with an understanding of STATS (Buried Service Plans) and how to interpret them, and includes the recognition that STATS are not always accurate. Training in understanding electromagnetic theory is discussed and how a pipe and cable locator works, together with what it can and cannot locate. Operatives learn the correct use of the CAT 4 and Genny 4 in all modes, with major emphasis on the Genny, and includes checking that the equipment is working correctly. CAT 4 training shows interpretation of the signal and how to locate service joints, and changes in depth and direction.

Genny 4 training demonstrates the benefits of dual frequency, a variety of applications, and using it to locate small or non-earthed cables sing capacitance. The four different methods of earthing the Genny are taught along with Blind Induction search and effective nulling of services. Operatives also learn how to use the CAT software specifically for the CAT 4 and how to analyse the data.

Operatives will also train in a number of areas on-site. Operatives learn the importance of carrying out visual site checks before beginning any work, and ascertaining the existing routes of buried mains and services according to STATS and existing site information. They will carry out practical work using the equipment in all modes including testing and ensuring the equipment is in good working order, and confirming and locating buried mains and services from the STATS and visual site inspection.

Operatives will practice using the Genny 4 in all modes and understand the benefits of using the CAT 4 and Genny 4 in combination including the use of dual frequencies. They will also practice location of services such as street lighting during the day when there is no power running through the cables.

All operatives then sit a multiple choice exam and must obtain a 70% mark in order to pass.
