The Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine hosted an international forum for world traditional medicine in December, the first formal gathering of its kind, and faculty from Southern California University were pleased to attend.

It is not uncommon amongst medical communities for the definition of traditional medicine to be misunderstood. In many circles, assumptions are made that because traditional medical treatments have been around a long time, they are inferior to newer, more technologically advanced techniques. Traditional medicine, however, has a long and rich history. It is defined as the combined knowledge, skills, and practice based on culturally unique experiences which are used for health maintenance and treatment.

At the international forum, collaborative efforts were made to dispel these myths as they prevent the integration of traditional medicine into global health policy. Representatives from nine countries presented information about varying schools of traditional and complementary medicine in an effort to explore multiple kinds of alternative medicine while spreading awareness and knowledge about the cultural histories, backgrounds, and applications to health policy of each. In doing so, the Shanghai Shuguang Traditional Chinese Medicine Research and Development Foundation hoped to achieve its goal of assisting traditional Chinese medicine?s (TCM) outward global expansion and integration into more modern medical practices. So far, this sought-after integration has been evasive due to variability in training, practice, licensure, and cultural differences.

While most of the information presented included information about each form of traditional medicine and speculated on future directions and growth, more visual exhibitions were also utilized in order to convey a wealth of information not conveyed as aptly through words alone. Two demonstrative sessions were performed at the forum and included instruction in yoga and Baduanjin qigong.

In the same vein, SCU strives to promote evidence-based teaching in the spirit of diversity. Whether in Shanghai or on our own campus in Southern California, our students and faculty all have the ability to continue collaborative efforts in order to promote quality and advances within the fields of alternative and integrative medical care. By learning with a spirit of curiosity and openness, it is SCU?s participation in these kinds of events that sets us apart as a community dedicated to cultural awareness as it reflects on evidence-based outcomes and global health policy changes.

While this forum was the first of its kind, it will certainly not be the last, and SCU looks forward to these future collaborative efforts.
