The founder and lead surgeon of Lewisville Flower Mound Oncology talks about life after cancer.

Lewisville, TX, With more than 15.5 million Americans estimated to be living well beyond a diagnosis of cancer, it is evident that better treatments, routine screening and raised awareness are having a positive impact. As the number of survivors remains on track to reach 20 million within the next decade, some clinicians are urging that now is the time for the healthcare profession to prepare for the increased demand for services patients will have to ensure healthier, long-term outcomes.

?Cancer survivors can go on to lead healthy, happy lives,? says Dr. Gregory Echt, founder and lead surgeon at Lewisville Flower Mound Oncology. ?That doesn?t change the reality, however, that survivors also have a very distinct set of medical, emotional and psychological needs that doctors and others in the healthcare profession need to be prepared to meet.?

The American Cancer Society is one of the organizations working to raise awareness about the growing needs the survivor population may have. Some of the areas that are likely to witness an uptick in demand include:

? Ongoing care ? Cancer survivors may require ongoing monitoring, a need for treatment side effect management and other specialized care. In addition, they may find themselves more likely to contract secondary cancers, which requires vigilance.
? Emotional and psychological support ? People who have successfully battled cancer in the past may face fears about secondary cancer risks, suffer from treatment-related side effects or have other concerns that require ongoing emotional and psychological support.
? Financial assistance ? A diagnosis of cancer can take a toll on a person?s finances that lasts well beyond treatment. Programs to assist will likely be in greater demand as survivor numbers continue to grow.

?As more people live beyond cancer, it is imperative that healthcare professionals and others stand ready to help them lead their lives to the fullest,? says Dr. Echt. ?Routine care and ongoing support can make a big difference in improving long-term outcomes.?
