The Canadian Rockies are on many peoples bucket list of locations to visit and for some lucky couples it?s where they will say their wedding vows. Banff, Lake Louise, and Jasper get the majority of the visitors, but there are a few locations that offer just as much and are a lot quieter. Canmore Wedding Photographer Alan Maudie has been photographing weddings in the Canadian Rockies for over a decade and has seen a wide range of weddings from small helicopter accessed mountain top elopements to the biggest event ever held at the Banff Springs Hotel.

?The National Parks (Banff, Yoho, Jasper) of Canadian Rockies are busy for a reason, they are world class. While I live in Calgary, Alberta, my house is only 45 minutes from Canmore, which is just outside the park. As a Canmore Wedding Photographer I have come to realize over the years that just about all my Canmore couples are from Alberta, whereas when I photograph weddings in Banff, a lot of the couples are from international locations. I don?t think most people from outside the area are aware of what Canmore has to offer and this to me is what makes it such a great location to get married.?

Canmore sits right up against the Banff Park boundary and was made famous during the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics where it played host to the nordic skiing events. The Bow River flows through town under the ragged peaks of Ha Ling Peak, The Three Sisters and Mt. Rundle. There are ample options for accommodations and amazing restaurants, pubs and food trucks. The Nordic Centre is a world class cross country skiing venue and in the summer transforms into hundreds of kilometres of mountains biking and trail running. Hiking and climbing options are available in all directions and for its a destination for fly fisherman and golfers as well.

?As photographer working on a wedding day it can be really difficult if you are competing with a large group of tourists for the same location. Most people are really considerate and love to see a bride, but it only lasts for a while and then they want their photo too. It can also be intimidating and awkward for some couples who don?t like having a large group of strangers looking at them and taking photos. As a Canmore Wedding Photographer I have developed a reputation for creating relaxed and unposed portraits. So trying to do that at some of the more famous locations is difficult. It?s not to say it can?t be done in Banff or Lake Louise, as I do have my secret little locations, but in general the Canmore scene is just a lot more relaxed.?
