Fremont, Nebraska. [Prairieland Press] author Joyce H. Winfield, Ph. D., Fremont, Nebraska, has been awarded the [Historic Preservation Recognition Award] by the Lewis-Clark Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution in Nebraska. The award was presented at the Lewis-Clark Chapter's annual awards ceremony held at the May Museum on April 4, 2017, in Fremont, Nebraska.

Dr. Winfield is the author of [Forever Heroes: A Collection of World War II Stories from Nebraska Veterans](https://prairielandpress.com/forever-heroes/). David Hendee, Omaha World-Herald reporter, has this to say about Forever Heroes: "It's all here. Moments of terror. Days of tedium. Lifelong pride. This was the reality of World War II for the men and women of the Greatest Generation. More than seven decades later, Joyce Winfield's research and storytelling, based on interviews with Nebraskans who served at the home front and on the front lines, paint vivid and personal pictures that transform these neighbors around us into compelling individuals. They survived torpedoed ships and POW camps, turned shrapnel into a tie clasp and nursed the wounded in the jungles of the South Pacific. These are the ordinary people who did extraordinary things."

The Historic Preservation Recognition Award recognizes and honors an individual or group that has done recent remarkable volunteer work at the community level. The award recognizes achievements in all areas of historic preservation: buildings, landmarks, monuments, cemeteries, historic districts, statues, museum collections, manuscripts, documents, and archival materials. It also includes writing or compiling and publishing books on historic preservation projects, historical properties, genealogical and court house records, and photography collections; as well as compiling oral histories; and serving as historical guides, interpreters or docents.

Dr. Winfield accepted the award with these words: "It was an honor and privilege to write the World War II stories of 21 veterans featured in Forever Heroes. It pleases me that these stories will be forever preserved. Having the Daughters of the American Revolution honor me with the Historic Preservation Recognition Award is very humbling and appreciated."
