RiseSmart’s ‘Big Game’ Predictions Based On Low Employment Rates

The team winning the 2017 professional football championship game will be from the city with a lower unemployment rate, according to a prediction by leading provider of contemporary career transition services, RiseSmart. The New England team hailing from Boston, currently holds a 2.4% unemployment rate, will beat Atlanta, where the unemployment rate is 4.8%, according to large metropolitan area unemployment rates from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

RiseSmart successfully predicted Denver’s victory over Carolina in 2016. This is the seventh consecutive year RiseSmart has issued its “Big Game” prediction based on unemployment data, claiming the team whose fan base enjoys greater economic prosperity, as measured by lower unemployment rates, will win. Using this prediction methodology, the company has achieved a 75 percent accuracy rate over the past 36 championship games.

“It’s encouraging to see consistent improvement in unemployment rates across the board, in Boston, Atlanta, and other cities across the U.S.,” said RiseSmart President and CEO, Sanjay Sathé. “At RiseSmart we quickly put people back to work and we never underestimate the power of having a job. Meaningful employment impacts workers, their families, their communities, and – just maybe – their football teams.”

Interestingly, in the nine times when a lower unemployment rate did not equate to a victory for the city, the New England team played in the Big Game four of those times. While RiseSmart has consistently predicted Big Game victories for decades, the verdict is still out on whether the correlation is more than simply a coincidence.

“While we’re predicting a New England win over Atlanta based on the metro area unemployment rates, who are we to say what will ultimately drive the team to championship football victory?” said Sathé. “One thing is clear: both cities will depend greatly on their fan base to cheer them on loudly and proudly to victory.”
