The year 2017 will see an increase in the training of business leaders in workplace mental health.

That is the opinion of respected corporate training specialist Anita Kropacsy of Corporate Challenge Events.

?We are working in a corporate world that is rapidly changing, where people are putting in longer hours, contactable 24/7 via multiple forms of technology, all whilst trying to blend home and work lives,? said Kropacsy.

?Unfortunately adapting to these changes and the amount we pack into our work lives has brought a dark side ? a rise in mental health issues in the workplace.

?It?s a problem, first and foremost, affecting the wellbeing of our people, but it also presents a major financial cost to business.?

Kropacsy said business was heading in the right direction with much greater awareness of mental health issues in the workplace and the amount of support services available.

?There has been a shift in the focus of business leaders in recent years to recognisethe impact that mental health has on their workforce.

?I believe this year we will see an increasing number of leaders and managers undertake training and education in this area, so they are even better equipped to identify and manage mental health issues and actively nurture a mentally healthy workplace.?

Recent research showcases the value of a mentally healthy workplace.

?Today a mentally healthy workplace is the second most important factor in our decision to accept a new position, just behind pay,? said Kropacsy.

?And it makes us more committed to our job and less likely to seek other employment.?

PwC research also found that the impact of mental health issues on productivity, participation and compensation claims has cost Australian businesses approximately $11 billion a year.

With mental health predicted by Kropacsy to be a key content area in corporate training workshops, business seminars and conferences in 2017, what does she believe will be a common theme?

?Nurturing a mentally healthy workplace ultimately comes down to creating a positive corporate culture and the opportunity for all workers to have a great day.

?When we spend so much of our lives at work, we want to have a great day. So we need to look at how employers and employees can work together to create more great days at work.

?It?s not all about having fun, it?s also providing a friendly and supportive environment that minimises workplace risks related to mental health, supports people with mental health conditions appropriately, prevents discrimination and prioritises employee wellbeing.?

Kropacsy said an aim for Corporate Challenge Events in 2017 was to make a difference in the area of workplace mental health.

?We have corporate training programs available to address this topic and the capability to deliver them within company conferences or complement them with tailored team building activities.?
