Tomosynthesis Becoming More Popular Breast Cancer Screening Option

The founder and lead surgeon of Lewisville Flower Mound Oncology talks about breast cancer screening.

Lewisville, TX, ? While routine mammograms remain the gold standard for breast cancer screening, a relatively new development is gaining ground. The National Comprehensive Cancer Network has begun recommending that doctors more seriously consider tomosynthesisfor patients who are of average to increased risk for breast cancer.

Tomosynthesis, or 3-D mammography, produces a more detailed picture of breast tissue. Unlike a standard mammogram that results in flat images, 3-D mammograms produce multiple small images of breast tissue that are created as a scanner moves in an arch. This technology is considered very effective at finding lesions that may go undetected by standard mammograms, especially in patients who have dense breast tissue.

?The network?s recommendation has the potential to be very good news for women and their healthcare providers,? explains Dr. Gregory Echt, founder and lead surgeon at Lewisville Flower Mound Oncology. ?Tomosynthesis can especially important for helping doctors detect cancer earlier in some higher risk women. Unfortunately, this test is not widely covered by insurance as of yet. If other organizations follow NCCN?s lead, this may change.?

Numerous studies have demonstrated the improved diagnostic qualities associated with tomosynthesis. One study, for example, showed the test consistently increased detection of invasive cancer by 40 to nearly 70 percent.

?Women who are at higher risk for breast cancer may find their doctors strongly recommending tomosynthesis for screening,? says Dr. Echt. ?This test has the ability to detect lesions that other screens simply may miss, potentially paving the way for earlier intervention and more positive outcomes.?

More than 230,000 American women are expected to be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in the coming year. It is strongly suggested that all women talk to their doctors about their risks and when routine screening should begin.
