A new in-depth research of more than 2000 surveyors found that young college women overwhelmingly desire an easier access to total slate of reproductive healthcare and are worried that they will lose their rights under the Trump and Pence administration.
Published in the last week, the survey was done to help understand how college going women felt about contraception and abortion after the President Trump?s inauguration. Even the responses to the survey were not uniform, publishers of the research commented that participants overwhelming think that pregnancy terminations should not be restricted by the government [ even if they think abortions should have limitations] and birth control should be more cost-effective.
The researchers opined that no matter how the numbers are spun, it is clear what college women want and that is access and choice. From the answers given to the survey questions about the POTUS, they are genuinely afraid that he doesn?t care about them.
What the participants said
Out of all, only a measly four number of students believed that Trump would have a positive effect on their rights, all four were glad to have an ?anti-abortion? president and thought that pregnancy termination was intrinsically wrong.
One of respondent was worried specifically about others than themselves on issues of access to affordable care to potential punishment for seeking abortive services. When all the answers were tallied, it was found that 30% said they would terminate an unwanted pregnancy, while 29% said they wouldn?t. Remaining 40% didn?t know what they would do.
In the meantime, approx. 75% described themselves as definitely pro-choice. Amongst the ?pro-life? or ?uncertain? young women, very few percentages thought that patients [ 11%] or medical professionals/ doctors [ 17%] should face ?consequence? should aborting be re-criminalized.
Survey answers reflect student?s feelings
Most noticeably, 87 answers expressed fear for their right?s future. Words like ?terrified?, ?afraid?, ?scared? had appeared numerous times in the open ended questions. One participant opined that she did not feel to have an equal right to choose what is best for her and felt greatly oppressed by the comments and decision that the POTUS has made regarding women.
While nearly a quarter of respondents had not considered if they themselves would have abortion, however 69% said they would absolutely take a friend to an appointment or help buy abortion pills online or assist in any way if they need to access abortive services.
More survey participants thought about others right to abort rather than their own, 89% - which comprises those who self-identify as ?pro-life? ? were decided and sure they didn?t want any harsh punishments for women seeking pregnancy termination or doctors who violated the restrictions.
Survey Results
In addition to shedding light on the attitudes of college women on abortion and contraceptive issues, the research highlighted the effectiveness of anti-abortion legislation in influencing the conventional opinions on development of the fetus, what a ?reasonable? limitations look like, the uniformed concept of anybody who hasn?t had pregnancy termination at that point is simple irresponsible.
While only 1% of abortions take place in 20th week, it can be seen how the false science [ that a 20-week fetus can feel pain] promoted by anti-choice communities affect the social opinions. In fact, science has already proved that the fetus is not developed to feel pain until the 29th week of pregnancy.
All the while, legislators continue to push ?heartbeat bills? that limit pregnancy termination to six weeks, long before most women even know about their pregnancy.
On the other hand, even though they have been influenced by changing political climate- where abortion is seen as an irresponsible choice, many young women want their legislators to know that access to full-reproductive care is important to them.
