29 March 2017, New Delhi: HarperCollins Publishers India has acquired the world rights for Zakir Hussain: A Life for Music, In Conversation with Nasreen Munni Kabir. The book will be published in January 2018

A tabla virtuoso, composer and percussionist, Zakir Hussain is an international phenomenon. He gave his first public concert at the age of seven, and was at once described as a child prodigy. His masterful dexterity and natural genius have led him to being among the most sought-after accompanists to the very best of Hindustani and Carnatic classical musicians and dancers, both past and present. He is equally recognized for his eminence as a genre-bending percussionist and composer. He has performed innumerable concerts as a solo artist and been at the helm of many of the groundbreaking and seminal musical collaborations of our time.

The book will be in the form of a series of in-depth conversations between Zakir Hussain and Nasreen Munni Kabir, who has written a number of very successful books in this genre. Here, Zakir Hussain will speak about his time as a young boy growing up in Mahim and being trained by his father, the extraordinary Ustad Allarakha; how Zakir developed as a musician, his move to America, first at the behest of Pandit Ravi Shankar and then to work with Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, the formation of Shakti, his sharp insights into music, and his mentoring of tabla students. Zakir talks in an engaging, witty and informed manner so that his hugely varied and rich life comes alive on the page, giving the reader a personalized view into Indian classical music and the thinking of a world musician of our times.

Speaking about the book, Zakir Hussain, says, ?Talking to Nasreen and, with her help and prodding, discovering nooks and crannies long overlooked in my life has been a fascinating revelation. I am touched by the enthusiasm shown by HarperCollins Publishers India for this endeavour and eagerly look forward to the release of this book.?

Author and journalist Nasreen Munni Kabir adds, ?Getting to know such an accomplished musician and fine person through the process of this book is enlightening. Zakir has a winning personality and coupled with the enthusiasm of HarperCollins Publishers India, I am impatient to see the work in print.?

Shantanu Ray Chaudhuri, executive editor, HarperCollins Publishers India, says, ?It is a privilege to be publishing this book and getting to know the world of one of the greatest musicians of our era. What makes this a double delight is that here he is in conversation with Nasreen Munni Kabir. This is a jugalbandi that we at HarperCollins are eagerly awaiting.?
