This year, Southern California University joined nearly four-hundred colleges and universities nationwide in an initiative spearheaded by the White House, designed to ensure college students are properly informed of their options in regards to healthcare. The challenge was a natural fit for SCU, given its rank as one of the top health sciences universities in the country. This initiative also aligns perfectly with the university?s ongoing commitment to create and maintain a healthy campus environment for all students.

As part of the challenge, the university hosted a multifaceted event entitled, ?SCU Cares?, which featured open enrolment opportunities for students and community members seeking healthcare coverage, a blood drive, and other community outreach and educational opportunities. In recognition of their efforts, several members of the SCU staff received an invitation to attend an event at the White House, honouring universities participating in the initiative.

A Bittersweet Honor

Among those attending the event as representatives of SCU were Health System Director of Marketing, Nichole Martinez, Marketing Liaison, Jaqueline Faria, and Associated Student Body President, Julie Lau. Although the White House event was an exciting opportunity for Lau, the moment was bittersweet; in attending, she would have to miss white coat ceremony, which was to be held at the same time. However, when SCU was called onstage to accept the award for their distinction in participation, Julie was thrilled to receive her white coat there, presented by Kristie Conagallo, Assistant to Former President Obama, and ongoing Deputy Chief of Staff of Implementation at the White House.

?It was an amazing experience and an honor to represent the SCU student body at the White House,? Lau was quoted as saying. ?Not only did I learn about the struggles, achievements, and impact the Affordable Care Act had on the American healthcare system within the last few years, but it also encouraged me to become a better healthcare provider for my future patients.?

Nichole Martinez was equally delighted. ?The best part of the trip was seeing Julie Lau being presented her white coat on stage,? she said. ?She was literally shaking with excitement. Knowing that the presentation was streaming live and that people at SCU were watching made it even better.?

After returning to SCU, the three representatives were honored to present the award to University President, Dr. John Scaringe. The university plans to continue to strive toward their own high standard of health science education, and to continue providing a healthy campus to faculty and students.
