Blood Test ‘Biopsies’ Offer Prostate Cancer Alternative

Irving, TX, ? Men who are diagnosed with prostate cancer or whose doctors suspect its presence may soon find an alternative to a traditional biopsy available to them. A simple blood test, known as a ?liquid? biopsy, is showing strong signs of success in clinical trials.

Liquid biopsies are meant to serve as a possible replacement for the need to use tissue samples to test for cancer?s presence or even determine if metastatic cancer is a concern. While still very much under study, a recent clinical trial showed the blood draw was effective in detecting metastatic cancer in about 94 percent of the patients tested. In addition, it provides the ability to detect genetic changes that may provide valuable prognostic information.

?The potential this advance holds is tremendously encouraging,? says Dr. Gregory Echt, founder and lead surgeon at the Prostate Seed Institute. ?Tissue biopsies remain the gold standard in definitively confirming the presence of prostate cancer and providing information about its staging and aggressiveness. This invasive test, however, does pose its own share of risks. Should liquid biopsies hold up to more intense scrutiny, they could make understanding the nature of patient?s tumor a much simpler process.?

Study into the test?s viability continues. It remains unclear how soon it might be made more readily available for use in the fight against prostate cancer. In the meantime, men will find a diversity of viable tests available to help guide treatments if prostate cancer is diagnosed.

It is estimated about 160,000 American men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in the coming year. Thanks to early screening and effective treatments, most men who face this diagnosis enjoy positive outcomes.
