New Test May Catch Prostate Cancer Recurrences Faster

The founder of PET/CT at Las Colinas talks about the benefits of a new screening tool.

Irving, TX ? Men who get an all-clear after prostate cancer treatments have been deemed successful are sometimes surprised to find their need for routine follow-ups doesn?t go away. Prostate-specific antigen levels must, after all, be tracked to safeguard against possible recurrences. Catching cancer?s return in its earliest phase is essential for protecting long-term health. A relatively new screening tool may make it even easier to detect and locate recurrences should they arise.

Men who have been treated for prostate cancer are strongly urged to go in for routine follow-ups. Even if prostate cancer treatments have been deemed highly successful, there is a risk for recurrence. High PSA results can signal this potential concern. Thanks to the development of C-11 and PET scans, doctors are now better able to determine if elevated PSA levels are cause for concern.

It is estimated about 160,000 American men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in the coming year. Early detection and treatment can ensure positive outcomes even in higher risk cases, making routine screening for men at risk for this disease important.
