Smoking-Related Cancer Rates Fall

The founder and lead surgeon of the North Texas Cancer Center at Wise talks about positive progress.

Decatur, TX, ? As aggressive educational campaigns and prevention efforts begin to show their effects, the number of tobacco-related cancer deaths is on a steady decline in the United States. Researchers are finding as more people kick the habit and fewer light up in the first place, the incidence rates of related cancers are starting to fall.

?The numbers are modest, but they are a positive sign that preventative measures are working,? says Dr. Gregory Echt, founder and lead surgeon at the North Texas Cancer Center at Wise. ?The progress, however, doesn?t signal an end to tobacco-related cancers just yet. They simply reinforce the need for continuance of efforts to help people quit or avoid using tobacco all together.?

The numbers that back the decline come from data provided by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That agency reports that between 2004 and 2008, the number of people per 100,000 who died from tobacco-related cancers was about 108. During the period of 2009 to 2013, that number fell to about 100 deaths per 100,000.

?Even while the numbers are falling, tobacco remains the leading preventable cause of cancer in the United States,? says Dr. Echt. ?Linked to lung, throat and oral cancers, among many others, tobacco use can have deadly consequences.?

People who smoke or use other forms of tobacco are strongly urged to quit. If doing so proves problematic, doctors have tools at their disposal to assist. Smoking cessation programs coupled with prescription medications, for example, can help smokers walk away from this habit once and for all.

?Giving up smoking and other related tobacco use can greatly improve overall health,? says Dr. Echt. ?In addition to lowering the risk for cancer, stopping smoking can reduce risks for heart disease, lung disease and a long list of other potentially life-limiting conditions.?
