Toronto Brain Injury Lawyer Draws Attention To Issues Beyond New Concussion Law

Anyone who follows the news will appreciate what an important step in healthcare and youth protection the advancement of the mooted ?Rowan's Law' through the Ontario Parliament is. However, while no one can deny that this is indeed a significant move towards preventing more severe sporting injuries and deaths due to concussions, personal injury lawyers Himelfarb Proszanski highlight the fact that current news might overshadow the bigger picture of brain injuries and the impacts of concussions on people€™s lives, and on society in general. According to them, much more should be done to raise awareness and support victims.

One can€™t fail to be moved by the story of young Rowan Stringer; a 17-year-old girl from Barrhaven, a suburb of Ottawa, ON, who died in May 2013 after suffering three concussions in less than a week while playing high school rugby. Initiated by Rowan€™s family and driven by many MPP, Ontario€™s legislature passed €œRowan€™s Law€, Canada€™s first concussion legislation, on June 7th, 2016.

"While this move to protect young people and athletes from preventable brain injuries is entirely laudable," says David Himelfarb, brain injury lawyer and Managing Partner at Himelfarb Proszanski, "it€™s vitally important that we don€™t lose sight of the wider issue. In that respect, I feel the new concussion legislation only draws attention to one aspect of head injuries, hiding other causes of concussions and the larger issue faced by all brain injury victims."

"452 people suffer a brain injury every day in Canada (1), and they affect every community, age group, and gender equally. Beyond sport related head injuries, which currently make the news, many other events cause concussions: motor vehicle accidents (MVA), work-related accidents, violent attacks, and even seemingly innocuous incidents in the home. Each one has the potential to have a profound effect upon the victims, their families, their workplace; in fact upon every part of their lives. That€™s why our whole society is concerned."

Seeing the devastating consequences that brain injuries have had on so many of their clients, Himelfarb Proszanski have become heavily involved in [supporting victims of brain injuries](http://www.himpro.ca/services/brain-injury-lawyer/), not only offering legal representation, but also seeking to draw attention to the bigger picture, sponsoring events such as the Hamilton Acquired Brain Injury Conference, associations such as the Ontario Brain Injury Association (OBIA) and organizations including the St. Mike€™s Hospital Head Injury Clinic, among many others. The company also backed the creation of a patient and family lounge at Toronto Rehab, the organization behind the largest Brain and Spinal Cord Program in Canada. And while June is Brain Injury Awareness month, the firm is also attending June 15th, 2016 breakfast celebrating the 1-year anniversary of the Hull-Ellis Concussion Clinic at Toronto Rehab.

"Rowan€™s Law is a great step forward in recognizing the devastating impact that brain injuries can have," adds Himelfarb, "but we mustn€™t forget that concussion induced brain injuries have a much larger scope and impact on people€™s lives than the sole youth and athlete related sports concussions. Creating protective bills is a first step, but creating a society that actively helps and supports victims of brain injuries will have an even greater impact. There is a far wider remit to consider."
