Parker Waichman LLP, a national law firm dedicated to protecting the rights of consumers affected by defective products, comments that Johnson & Johnson has just been ordered to pay $55 million to a 62-year-old woman from South Dakota woman who was diagnosed with cancer in 2011 after using J&J€™s talc-based hygiene products for nearly four decades. The woman underwent a hysterectomy, is now in remission, and alleges her ovarian cancer was due to her use of J&J€™s talcum powder; the jury awarded $5 million in compensatory and $50 million in punitive damages. This is the second trial loss this year, according to [Bloomberg.com](http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-05-02/j-j-ordered-to-pay-55-million-over-cancer-linked-to-talc). This case is Ristesund v. Johnson & Johnson, Imerys Talc America, Inc.; Case Number: 1422-CC09012-01; State of Missouri 22nd Circuit Court, City of St. Louis.

In February, J&J lost a $72 million verdict to the family of a woman who died of ovarian cancer. That case is Hogans v. Johnson & Johnson, 1422-CC09012-01, Circuit Court, St. Louis City, Missouri.

According to Bloomberg.com, documents from a prior case indicate that Johnson & Johnson knew about the health concerns associated with the talcum powder products since the mid-1970s. Also, a 1992 document suggested women who were high users of talcum powder were targeted to drive sales.

According to Parker Waichman, the Firm has been contacted by a number of women who have raised concerns regarding their regular use of talcum powder to their genital areas. Specifically, these woman are concerned that they may experience increased risks for developing ovarian cancer and are worried that the powder may make its way to their ovaries, where it may settle and lead to inflammation and, later, cancer. Parker Waichman LLP recently filed at least two lawsuits on behalf of women who allege that Johnson & Johnson talcum powder products led to serious and life changing adverse health reactions. Parker Waichman filed the actions in State of Missouri 22nd Circuit Court, City of St. Louis; Cause Number 1622-CC01357.

€œThe firm is hopeful that, as litigation continues, just compensation results continue for women and their families who have suffered serious injuries, even death, following use of Johnson & Johnson Baby Powder and Shower to Shower products,€ said Melanie Muhlstock, Managing Attorney at Parker Waichman LLP. €œParker Waichman continues to provide free legal consultations to anyone who seeks more information about legal rights regarding these products.€

More than 1,000 lawsuits have been brought against Johnson & Johnson in both state and federal courts over its Shower-to-Shower and Johnson and Johnson€™s Baby Powder products. Women allege that J&J not only ignored research that tied its powder products to ovarian cancer, but that the healthcare provider did not warn its customers of these risks, wrote Bloomberg.com. €œThe more talc verdicts that come down against them adds to the public€™s growing distrust of their baby powder, which is one of their iconic products,€ Carl Tobias, who is not involved in the case but who teaches product-liability law at the University of Richmond in Virginia, told Bloomberg.com. €œThere are both economic and reputational issues that may motivate them to start thinking about a global settlement of these cases.€
