Elite Fleet Names Safety Conscientious Drivers of the Month
National Carriers, Inc. has named Oak Hill, WV owner operators, Sandy and Allen Smith as NCI Drivers of the Month for January 2016. Approaching five million accident free miles, Allen is lead driver and Sandy serves as second seat. They began working at National Carriers in August of 1987 and operate their truck in the NCI 48 state refrigerated division for the ?Elite? Fleet.
?I've always felt that the reason I continue my lease at NCI is because the people that I worked with in dispatch, when I first came to work here, moved up in management along the way. I always felt that I had relationships with people that I could go to when I had problems. Sandy and I are not really a true team. We've never called ourselves a team. We never wanted to run like a team. We're glad to help out when we are needed, but we didn't want to be forced into anything. Sandy is a qualified driver, but there are limits to what she can do. There are many benefits to running as a team. We personally like spending all our time together. We've had many wonderful experiences and continue to make great memories. I do continue to be a multi-million mile safe driver by reminding myself how fast and easy accidents can happen. Pre-trip and post trip are not just at the beginning and end of your trip, they are all-day duties. Sometimes that means pulling out the toolbox. Many times it means crawling under your equipment in the very worst weather conditions. Of course, it doesn't hurt having the assistant safety director sitting beside me,? Allen chuckled as he winked in Sandy?s direction.
Each Driver of the Month is a finalist for NCI Driver of the Year 2016 with each monthly winner receiving a $500 bonus. National Carriers Driver of the Year is awarded a $5000 prize at the NCI Driver of the Year Banquet held in Arlington, Texas in the spring of 2017.
